This course is designed to introduce students to a diversity of topics from Canada’s past prior to Confederation: from the Indigenous civilizations that thrived for millennia to the arrival of European explorers and settlers and the complex interactions that ensued. Students will explore the fur trade, early colonial settlements, and the socio-political landscapes that set the stage for the formation of a unique Canadian identity. Students will consider the role of key figures and events as well as the political, social, economic, and cultural dimensions that helped shape Canada. Students will consider the nuanced and diverse perspectives that went into the development of modern Canada, illuminating the roots of its multicultural and multi-dimensional character.
