This core course in the nursing curriculum examines the nutritional needs of specific client groups throughout the lifespan and in various states of wellness.  Basic principles of nutrition including the physiology of macronutrients, micronutrients, and energy metabolism will be discussed.  In this course we look at various nutrition controversies. The student must understand that nutrition science is in constant flux—a “consensus” statement often simply reflects what the majority of experts believe; plenty of other experts may disagree. Topics related to trends and issues in nutrition as well as psychosocial and cultural aspects of food and eating behaviours will be explored. Understanding how disease processes may affect nutrition and integrating clinical application of nutrition principles to ensure optimal nutrition in disease states is a major component of this course.  Alternative forms of nutrition such as enteral and parenteral feeding will be addressed.
